The fictional Terminator franchise seemingly inched one step closer to becoming a reality recently when the Russian press revealed behind-the-scenes footage of their new military robot that can shoot guns and make decisions. They also insist it’s not a “Terminator”.
“We are not creating a Terminator” argued Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, “rather an artificial intellect that will have a huge applied value for different spheres of life. Combat robotics is a key to building intellectual machines. This is applicable to areas including aviation and space.”
Their new combat robot is called F.E.D.O.R, a human-like creation that can be programmed to make its own decisions, drill holes, do push ups and lift weights (enough to make actor Arnold Schwarzenegger proud). It can also fire guns and drive a car.
Russian robotic experts also want to improve its intelligence software, which will allow the combat robot to make more decisions on its own… because what could go wrong, right?
We’ll be back.
